IMPORTANT
NOTICE:
All NOAA employees and contractors involved with the transportation
of Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) must be trained according to U.S. Department
of Transportation standards (U.S. Code of Federal Regulations 49, part
172.700).
Last year, a NOAA facility offered hazardous materials to Federal Express
Corporation for transportation in air commerce. With assistance from
the courier, the shipment was packaged and labeled properly. However,
the NOAA employee involved in the handling of this shipment had not received
the required DOT training for the transportation of hazardous materials.
A violation of this training requirement (49 CFR 172) could result in
a fine of up to $30,000 per incident, per day.
Therefore it is essential that those persons handling such shipments
receive this training prior to working with these materials, and that
training records are maintained. Anyone having questions, or needing
directions on where and how to find training opportunities should contact
Minh Trinh at 206-526-6647. E-mail: Thanh.M.Trinh@noaa.gov.
